Differences between short films and feature length film

Differences between a short film and a feature length film

A feature length film is a series of shots that are put together to portray a story. Feature length films must often last longer than 70 minutes, whereas a short film should last up to only 45 minutes.

  • Lower budget
  • Audience must be kept entertained at all times, more than they would have to be in a   feature length film.
  • Less time required to make the film.
  • Untrained actors would be used in a short film rather than a feature length.
  • Straight to the point (smaller time frame).
  • Aimed at niche audiences.
  • More suspense.
  • Compaction, compression.
  • Simpler set-ups.
  • Short films do not always use cameras (classical animation techniques).
  • Short films have one general message.
  • Not many characters can be in a short film (1, 2 at the most).
  • Physical and metaphorical journey at the same time.
  • A short film can push the boundaries.
  • A short film has internal logic.
